The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Projection
nDeveloped in 1947 by US army
nA type of cylindrical projection but unlike the normal cylindrical projection, it is called Transverse Mercator because the cylinder is wrapped around the Poles, not on the Equator.
nCurrently, the WGS84 ellipsoid is used as the underlying model of the Earth in the UTM coordinate system.
nImplemented as an internationally standard coordinate system
