- Project Summary
- At present, Japan has created numerous
statistical books which could provide valuable information on the development
process that took place in the country. Not until recently, the
utilization of statistics in regional analysis required enormous work
processes to obtain statistical analysis i.e., restriction on data access,
absence of maps, differences in time period and area of analysis, etc.
On the one hand, such circumstances have improved gradually because of the
spread of GIS and the distribution of digital databases. Specifically, GIS
has largely contributed to the shortening of the mapping process and the
development of high-level statistical analysis. In view of this, the
release of pre-World War II map data and digitalization of statistical data
contributes to the development of historical statistical GIS. On this
regard, from 2004 thereafter, the Division of Spatial Information Science of the
University of Tsukuba Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences opens
to public a download service facility consisting of various statistical data and
administrative boundary map data, free of charge.
